Your Privacy on Studia
Last Updated: 19th October 2026
This notice is for you — the students who use Studia. We have written it in plain language so you can understand what happens with your information when you use our platform.
Studia is for students aged 7 to 18. We wrote this for you to read on your own. If a word is new to you, ask your parent or guardian, or email privacy@studia.io and we will explain it.
For the full legal details, your parent or guardian can read our Privacy Policy.
Who are we?
Studia is an online learning platform where you can watch live lessons and have one-to-one tutoring sessions.
We are run by a company called Sophos Education Ltd, based in London. When we say “we” or “us” in this notice, we mean Studia.
If you have any questions about this notice, you can contact us at privacy@studia.io or write to us at: Studia, 10 St. Edmunds Square, London, England, SW13 8SA.
What information do we collect about you?
When you use Studia, we collect some information about you. Here is what we collect and why:
Information you or your parent gives us:
- Your name and date of birth — so we know who you are and your age group
- Your school year, subjects, and exam boards — so we can match you with the right lessons and tutors
- Messages you send in class chats — your tutor and the other students see them. Our Safety Checker reads every one. We delete them 30 days after your subscription ends.
- Special educational needs, if you tell us — so your tutor can help. You choose. We ask first. You can say stop later.
- Your mobile number, if you are 13 or over. If your parent has linked their account to yours, they choose whether your lesson reminders come to you or to them. If they come to you and you turn them off, they go back to your parent. If no parent is linked and you are 16 or over, we need your number so we can text you about your lessons. We never send you adverts by text.
Information we collect automatically:
- What you do on the platform — like which lessons you watch, how long you spend on Studia, and which features you use
- Basic information about your device — like what type of phone or computer you are using and your web browser
- Your IP address — this is a number that helps us understand roughly where you are connecting from
- When you join and leave a 1:1 lesson, so we can sort out missed lessons fairly
Cookies:
We also use cookies — small files stored on your device that help the platform work and remember your preferences. You can find out more in our Cookie Notice.
Why do we collect your information?
We collect your information for these reasons:
- To give you lessons and tutoring — this is the main reason. We need your information to run the platform.
- To keep you safe — we monitor lessons and chats to make sure everyone is treated well and no one is being harmed.
- To make Studia better — we look at how people use the platform (without identifying you personally) so we can improve it.
- To follow the law — there are rules we have to follow about keeping children safe online.
We never use your information to: show you adverts, or sell your information to anyone.
Why are we allowed to use your information?
Privacy law means we need a proper reason — called a “legal basis” — for using your information. Here are the reasons we use:
- To give you lessons and tutoring — when you joined, you agreed to our rules. We need your information to keep our side of the deal. If you are under 13, your parent agreed for you. This includes texts about your lessons, like a reminder before each one.
- Because we have a legitimate interest — for things like making Studia work better and keeping it secure. We always make sure this is balanced fairly against your privacy.
- Because we have your permission — for optional things, like using your information for research purposes. You or your parent can withdraw this permission at any time.
- To follow the law — sometimes we are legally required to use or share your information, for example to comply with safeguarding rules.
Are my lessons recorded?
Livestream lessons (the group ones) are recorded. One-to-one lessons are not recorded. Here is how it works:
| Session type | Who can watch it? | How long is it kept? |
|---|---|---|
| Livestream lessons (the group ones) | You and your parent can watch them back while your subscription is active. | Kept as long as the content library exists. We will give notice if this changes. |
Why do we record? Recording helps keep everyone safe, and you cannot turn it off. In a group lesson you are not on camera and we do not record your voice. We record your tutor, and the chat.
How does the AI work?
Studia uses AI (artificial intelligence) to help keep you safe.
- The Safety Checker — it reads every message in the class chat, looking for anything unkind or unsafe, like bullying or someone trying to share personal information. Every message, every time.
Important things to know about the AI:
The Safety Checker only looks for unsafe or unkind messages — that is its job.
We do not use your messages to train AI models.
Who sees my information?
Only the people who need to see your information can access it:
- Other students in your class see the messages you send, with your name next to them.
- Your tutors see your name, school year, subjects, and what you send in lessons. When you book a one-to-one, your full name goes into your tutor’s own calendar too.
- Your parent or guardian can see your activity, lesson history, and recordings through their dashboard.
- Our Safety Team can look at recordings and messages if there is a safety concern.
- Our technology partners help us run the platform — for example, one company handles video calls and another handles payments. They only see what they need to do their job, and they must keep your information safe.
What about transfers outside the UK?
Some companies that help us are in the United States. That is where our video lessons and lesson recordings are kept. Their rules have been checked and approved for the UK. You can ask us which companies these are yourself, and so can your parent.
What are cookies?
Cookies are small files that are stored on your device when you visit a website or use an app. They help the platform remember things — like that you are logged in — and help us understand how people use Studia so we can make it better.
We use cookies for things like:
- Keeping you logged in to your account
- Remembering your preferences
- Understanding which parts of the platform are most useful
Our Cookie Notice lists the cookies we use. To change them, go to Settings, then Account, then Privacy, and press “Manage cookies”. Only you can change this, on your own device.
What are my rights?
You have rights over your information. You can:
- See it — ask us for a copy of the information we hold about you.
- Fix it — if something is wrong, ask us to correct it.
- Delete it — ask us to delete your information (though we may need to keep some for safety or legal reasons).
- Say stop — ask us to stop using your information for something. Email privacy@studia.io.
- Get a copy — ask for your information in a format you can take elsewhere.
- Change your mind — you can change your mind at any time.
- Ask us to think again — if a message you sent is hidden or blocked and you think that is wrong, email privacy@studia.io. A person will look at it and tell you what we decided.
These rights are yours. Ask us yourself — you do not need your parent, though they can help. Email privacy@studia.io. We answer within one month.
How can my parent or guardian help?
Your parent or guardian has a dashboard where they can:
- See your lesson history and which tutors you subscribe to
- Watch livestream recordings
- Manage your subscriptions
- Tell our Safety Team if they are worried about you, by emailing safeguarding@studia.io
- Ask for your information to be exported or deleted
- Ask us to close the account, by emailing privacy@studia.io.
You can ask for any of this yourself, and so can your parent: stop collecting information, see what we hold, or delete it. Email privacy@studia.io. The “Delete account” button in your settings emails our team instead.
What if something does not feel right?
If anything on Studia makes you feel uncomfortable, worried, or unsafe, please tell someone. You will not get in trouble for reporting something.
Here is what you can do:
- Email us at safeguarding@studia.io. Our Safety Team will read it and look into it. Write as much or as little as you like.
- Tell your parent or guardian — they can contact us too.
- Or talk to someone outside Studia. Childline is free on 0800 1111, any time. Or text SHOUT to 85258. If someone is in danger now, call 999. You do not have to tell your parent first.
We take every report seriously. If it is urgent, our Safety Team looks within 1 hour. Anything else, within 24 hours. It does not matter how you tell us.
You do not need proof to report something. If it does not feel right, that is enough.
How do we keep your information safe?
We protect your information by:
- Encrypting it — your data is scrambled so that only the right people can read it.
- Controlling access — only the staff who need to see your information can open it. Nobody else at Studia can.
- Checking regularly — we review our security to make sure it is working properly.
- Choosing trusted partners — when we share your information with companies that help us run the platform, we check they have strong security too.
Will my information be used for research?
Sometimes, we may use information about how students use Studia to help with educational research — for example, to understand how young people learn online. If we do this, we always:
- Make your information anonymous first, so it cannot be linked back to you
- Never share anything that could identify you personally
- Ask your permission first if the research needs more than anonymous information — or your parent’s, if they set up your account.
If you or your parent do not want your information used for research purposes, you can say no at any time by contacting privacy@studia.io.
Will this notice change?
We might update this notice from time to time — for example, if we add new features or if the law changes. If we make important changes to how we use your information, we will let you and your parent know by email and by posting the changes on the platform.
How do I get in touch?
If you have questions about your privacy, you or your parent can contact us. If you are unhappy with our answer, tell us and we will look again. You can also tell the Information Commissioner’s Office, who check that companies look after your information: www.ico.org.uk, 0303 123 1113.
